Welcome New Families & Kindergarteners

We are so excited you’ll be joining our Powell family! Below are answers to questions you may have. Please explore our website to learn more about us and reach out if you need anything. We look forward to meeting you!

  • Our Powell principal sends a weekly email on Sundays. You may also look at past emails here.

You can follow the school’s calendar. Here will give you more information on how to subscribe to the iCal feed.

You can also receive PTA newsletters and other communications by becoming a PTA member or by signing up for PTA communications. Newsletters are sent during the school year.

You can follow us on X, Instagram, or Facebook.

You can join our Facebook group.

  • The first step is becoming an approved WCPSS volunteer. Registration is required every year and runs from July 1-June 30.

Powell PTA is always looking for volunteers. Whether you want to help at an event, chair a committee, or be on the PTA board, we’ve got a spot for you. Please check out our volunteer page and our programs and events page for further information.

Registering as a WCPSS volunteer will allow you to chaperone field trips and help in the classroom too!

  • Powell PTA hosts summer playdates at various locations, usually at a playground or at an ice cream or sno-cone place. To learn when these playdates will happen, you can sign up to become a PTA member, sign up for PTA communications or join our Facebook group. If you’d like to host a playdate, please reach out!

We also host Popsicles on the Playground at Powell in August.

  • Powell is on the traditional calendar schedule. North Carolina requires that traditional schools open on or after the Monday closest to August 26th (and close on or before the Friday closest to June 11th). Therefore, the first day of school will be in late August. You may find the WCPSS instructional calendars here.

Grades 1-5 start school each year on the same day. Kindergarteners follow a staggered entry schedule.

  • During the first week of school, a small group of kindergarteners will attend one full day of school. Your kindergartener only goes on their staggered entry day during the first week. On their staggered entry day, they’ll meet staff and kindergarten teachers who will assess social, physical, and emotional development, as well as basic literacy and math skills.

  • Kindergarteners attend according to their last name. The staggered entry days will be listed on Powell’s website. There are usually three to four days for staggered entry.

  • Kindergarteners attend school all at once after Kindergarten Meet the Teacher.

  • Grades 1-5 will receive their teacher assignment usually just before school starts. There are typically a few teacher workdays prior to the first day of school and they work on class rosters then.

Kindergarteners find out who their teacher is after staggered entry.

  • Grades 1-5 will have a Meet the Teacher Night prior to the start of school.

Kindergarteners have a separate Meet the Teacher Night after staggered entry, but before they all attend school at once.

  • Supply lists will be listed on Powell’s website here. The school and the PTA usually notify families that the supply lists have been updated.

  • You may find out more about transportation here.

Please note that there will be delays in carpool and with buses the first couple of weeks as everyone is learning and getting used to new schedules.

  • Breakfast and lunch are available for purchase at Powell. You can find more information regarding cost, applying for reduced/free meals, or setting up an e-wallet here.

  • School is from 9:15am to 3:45pm. Students are able to be dropped off starting at 8:45am unless they attend before school care.

  • Domains are more interdisciplinary. They might use art, literature, and music to approach the domain topic from different angles. An elective is more of a deeper dive into one subject—orchestra, dance, art, etc.

You may learn more about the magnet program here.

  • After the start of each semester, the magnet coordinator sends a message, usually via TalkingPoints, with the course information and a survey to select your choices. It’s not first come, first served. You may not get your top choice. Please fill out the survey by the due date.

  • Yes! You may find more information about rates and times here.

  • We typically open our first spirit wear store of the new school year in August during back to school season.
